Army Goes Up Against Bucknell and Lehigh

WEST POINT, N.Y.  – The Army volleyball team will travel to Pennsylvania this weekend to play its respective matches versus Patriot League competitors Lehigh (15-6, 6-3 Patriot League) and Bucknell (8-10, 1-7). The Black Knights (11-8, 8-1) begin competition at Lewisburg, Pa., on Friday where they will go up against the Bison and close the weekend in Bethlehem, Pa. to play the Mountain Hawks.

Coming into the weekend, Army has yielded just three sets during its current six-match win streak and has posted four consecutive sweeps, including its victories over Lafayette, Navy and Holy Cross. The Black Knights have also earned a No. 79 ranking in the NCAA RPI data on Monday, Oct. 21. Army is third in the league in the NCAA standings behind Colgate (No. 54) and American (No. 61).

Offensively, senior co-captain outside hitter Margaux Jarka and freshman middle blocker Olivia Fairfield lead the Black Knights in kills with 220 and 214, respectively. Fairfield has racked up multiple Patriot League honors this season as a four-time Rookie of the Week recipient including the recognition received on Oct. 21.

On defense for the Black Knights, senior co-captain libero D.J. Phee has 334 digs this season and is 26 shy of becoming the second all-time in Patriot League history with 1,700 digs. Also on defense, Fairfield has contributed 58 blocks while senior right side hitter Kerry Horan and senior middle blocker Megan Wilton add 41 and 38 blocks, respectively.

Army has seen great success in its history with Bucknell, showing a perfect 12-0 record under Kovaci. The Black Knights hold a 28-13 advantage in the all-time series. Senior Morgan Mientus and freshman Erika Eastly lead the Bison with 129 and 122 kills, respectively. Eastly has also contributed 91 blocks this season which ranks first amongst the conference standings. Defensively, sophomore Katie Price has manages 4.15 digs per set with 270 digs for Bucknell this season. The Bison will host the Black Knights on Friday and reconvene on Saturday to continue Patriot League play against Holy Cross.

Army also holds a 32-13 lead in its all-time series against Lehigh, which dates back to the 1985 season. The Black Knights have won 20-straight matches against the Mountain Hawks, whose last victory against Army came in 2003. Lehigh comes into Friday’s match with an average hitting percentage of .206 and has been able to hold its opponents to .163. Leaders for the Mountain Hawks include juniors Jade Van Streepen and Kaylynn Genermaras with 224 and 192 kills, respectively. Senior Rachel Charles has controlled the Lehigh defense and holds the number one spot in the weekly conference standings with 300 digs this season. Saturday’s match will be the second meeting between the Patriot League contenders. Lehigh is coming off a two-game winning streak over Lafayette and NJIT.

In his third season at Lehigh, veteran head coach Bob Bertucci will host with his former West Point family on Friday night. Bertucci led Army to a 17-9 record in 1978 as the first volleyball head coach. Bertucci also spent four years instructing current Army head coach Alma Kovaci during her Hall of Fame career at Temple. He was the head coach at Temple for 16 seasons before moving on to Lehigh.
