Army Travels To Play Holy Cross For Second Straight Match

WEST POINT, N.Y.  – The Army volleyball team will travel to Worcester, Mass. to play its second straight match against Holy Cross on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Black Knights (10-8, 7-1 Patriot League) captured a 3-0 victory over the Crusaders (7-13, 2-6) on Tuesday night at Gillis Field House. Army rolled through the match with 25-15, 25-22, and 25-10 victories, holding its opponent to its lowest score in a 25-point set this season.

The Black Knights look to continue their five-match win streak on Saturday and hold their first place spot on the Patriot League standings. Holy Cross comes into the weekend tied with Loyola for the six-place spot in the conference standings.

In Tuesday’s meeting between the teams, senior outside hitter co-captain Margaux Jarka led all players with 15 kills. Jarka also managed an average hitting percentage of .481. Senior middle blocker Megan Wilton came up big for the Black Knights’ offense with nine kills and an average hitting percentage of .571.

Defensively, Army held Holy Cross to a low hitting percentage of .067 and only 25 kills. Sophomore setter Vanessa Edwards had 32 assists on the night while she and defensive specialist Deanna Dalton each tabbed 11 digs.

The opening set of Tuesday’s match began with a 6-6 tie score before Army would take a 12-6 lead. After the Crusaders took the next two points, the Black Knights would claim the next six points and go out to close the set, 25-15. The second and most competitive set ran in Holy Cross’ favor as the Crusaders led until the 22nd point. After coming back to tie the set, the Black Knights would capture the three final points for a 25-22 victory. In the third set, Army held Holy Cross to its second lowest score of the season as the barreled through for a 25-10 win.

Sophomore outside hitter Emily Oliver led Holy Cross with seven kills and two solo blocks, while freshman setter Katie McKernan added 17 assists, five kills and six digs.

Army has enjoyed great success against Holy Cross under the direction of head coach Alma Kovaci, owning a perfect 13-0 record against the Crusaders during her seven-year tenure. The Black Knights hold a 45-5 advantage in an all-time series that dates back to 1982. Holy Cross' last win (3-2) over Army came in 2005 in Worcester, Mass.
