WEST POINT, N.Y. - After totaling double-digit kills in a pair of wins over the weekend, volleyball sophomore Margaux Jarka picked up her first Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon. She is the third different volleyball player to be honored in 2011-12, joining teammates Ariana Mankus and Mary Vaccaro.
Jarka averaged 3.50 kills per set and hit for a .319 percentage in wins over Bucknell (3-0) and Colgate (3-2) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. After leading all players with 10 kills at Bucknell, Jarka amassed a career-high 18 kills in a crucial win over Colgate that helped vault the Black Knights into a tie with American for first place in the Patriot League standings.
In addition to 18 kills, Jarka completed her third double-double of the season with 11 digs against Colgate. She also came up with a career-high 5.0 total blocks. The Rolling Prairie, Ind., native's .533 hitting percentage at Bucknell on Friday night marked a season best.
Jarka is third on the team averaging 2.35 kills per set this season. She has increased that number to 2.91 over seven Patriot League matches. She is hitting .291 against conference opponents.
Army played five of its first seven Patriot League matches on the road, but returns home for five of the last seven contests. The Black Knights host Lafayette and Lehigh this weekend at Gillis Field House. Army takes on Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m. The Black Knights swept Lafayette in Easton, Pa., on Sept. 24. Under the direction of former Army mentor Bob Bertucci, Lehigh visits West Point on Saturday at 4 p.m. Army is 7-3 at Gillis Field House this season. Bertucci also coached current Army mentor Alma Kovaci during her four seasons at Temple. The Black Knights topped Lehigh (3-1) in the first meeting this fall in Bethlehem, Pa. Both weekend matches will be broadcast via ITT Knight Vision webcast.
