WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior volleyball co-captain Margaux Jarka and sophomore golfer Marcus Plunkett have been tabbed the Army Athletic Association Co-Athletes of the Week for their performances in helping their respective teams to victories over the weekend. It is the first honor of the year for Jarka, while Plunkett copped the award for the second straight week.
Jarka totaled double-digit kills in a pair of wins at Loyola and American over the weekend. Jarka averaged 3.56 kills per set and hit for a .321 percentage. After sending 15 kills over the net at Loyola, Jarka amassed a match high 17 kills in a crucial win over American to bring the Black Knights into second place in the Patriot League standings.
In addition to 17 kills, Jarka completed her 10th double-double of the season with 12 digs against American. She also matched her season-high versus the Eagles of 4.0 total blocks. The Rolling Prairie, Ind., native’s .361 hitting percentage at Loyola on Friday night marked a season best.
Jarka leads the team with 8.97 kills per set this season. In addition she is second on the team behind senior co-captain libero D.J. Phee with 182 digs.
Plunkett shot a two-under par to capture the individual title and led the Black Knights to the team championship at the inaugural Stars & Stripes Invitational at the West Point Golf Course. Despite battling wind and rain both days, Plunkett was the only player in the 55-man field that finished under par for the 54 holes. He claimed the lead with a 66-67 showing in the first two rounds Saturday and posted a 72 on the par-69 course to hold on to the victory. No player shot better than 70 during the wet and windy final round.
Army has won the last two events in which it has participated. The Black Knights defeated arch-rival Navy in the annual Star Match before defeating the nine other teams at West Point this past week.
Army continues Patriot League play this weekend as the Black Knights host Lafayette on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. for the Dig Pink match, and Navy in the Star Match on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. The golf team is scheduled to play in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate starting Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
