INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sophomore OH Ariana Mankus and junior OH Fabiola Castro posted 13 and 11 kills, respectively, to lead the Army volleyball team in a 3-0 setback against host Butler in the Black Knights' second match of the Butler Invitational at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Despite the 3-0 loss, the Black Knights and Butler gave a crowd of 1,000-plus a thrilling 32-30 contest in the second set. The Bulldogs came out on top after taking the first (25-14) and third set (25-17) in commanding fashion.
Senior S Karyn Powell registered a double-double with 30 assists and a team-high 12 digs. Castro hit for a .240 percentage to lead the Black Knights.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead and did not relinquish the edge the rest of the way. Army fell into a 13-2 hole and would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Easily the most competitive set of the match featured 12 ties and seven lead changes. After exchanging points in the early going, the Black Knights fell behind 21-17 late in the action. From there, Powell served for four points as Army embarked on a 6-3 run to take a 25-24 lead on a Butler error. The teams proceeded to play through six ties down the stretch with both teams enjoying match-point opportunities. Mankus' kill proved to be the final tie of the set, 30-30. Butler came up with a kill and blocked Mankus to put the game away, 30-32.
Butler used that momentum to its advantage into the third, jumping out to an 18-9 lead and never looking back. Army pulled within striking distance, 21-16, late in the action, but the Bulldogs were able to stave off a rally as they ended the set on a 4-1 run.
Maggie Harbison and Susan Lester led the Bulldogs with nine kills apiece. Army held the Colonial Athletic Association's top hitter, Jessica Wolfe, to just eight kills and a .077 hitting percentage. She entered the match averaging better than four kills per set.
