Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match To Xavier




INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Army volleyball team let a 1-0 match lead slip away as Xavier collected a 3-1 victory in what marked the opening match of the Butler Invitational for both clubs. Sophomore OH Ariana Mankus and freshman OH D.J. Phee bolstered the Army attack with eight kills apiece.

Army's offense produced 35 kills, but attacking errors cost the Black Knights as they hit just .112 for the match. Senior L Brittany Jensen anchored the defense with 15 digs, while Mankus added 13. Senior MB Amanda Rowell finished with five kills and as many blocks, while senior S Karyn Powell totaled 24 assists and four blocks.

Army jumped out to an early lead and hung on en route to a 25-23 win in the first set. The two squads traded points and the Black Knights went up three, 18-15, thanks to a Mankus kill. Army went on to stretch its lead to four, 23-19, and held on for the three-point win in the first game.

Xavier answered with a 25-13 win in the second set to knot the match at 1-1. A Black Knight service error leveled the score, 7-7, and it was then that the Musketeers made their move. Xavier went on a 6-0 run to jump ahead 13-7. A Xavier service error followed by an Army attack error set the score at 20-10 in favor of Xavier. Army would not recover from the deficit.

Army took a 4-3 lead in the third set, but the Musketeers proceeded to score the next four points unaswered to take a 7-4 lead. The Musketeers led by as many as seven in the set but the Black Knights would not back down. Army pulled to within one, 19-18, after a 4-0 run capped off by a Phee kill. The Black Knights' rally fell short, however, as Xavier took a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 triumph.   

In the fourth set, Xavier jumped ahead early, 6-4, and used a 4-0 run capped off by a kill from Kathryn Traut to go up six, 10-4. The Musketeers led by as many as eight, 20-12, before putting away the Black Knights 25-18 to take the fourth frame and the match by a score of 3-1.
