WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior outside hitter Ariana Mankus capped a standout weekend with a 20-kill, 25-dig effort against Texas Christian University, a performance which solidified her as Monday's Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. Mankus became the first volleyball player honored this season and picked up her fifth career AAA citation.
A native of Lisle, Ill., Mankus averaged 3.18 kills and 4.91 digs per set during the Black Knights' second-place finish at the TCU Nike Invitational. She totaled 35 kills to go with a monster 54 digs in three matches, and, along with team co-captain Francine Vasquez, represented Army on the All-Tournament Team.
Mankus registered a season-high 20 kills, 14 of which came during the final two sets, in a 3-1 loss to the host Horned Frogs on Saturday. She tallied eight kills in the Black Knights' 25-23 third-set victory. Army was the only team to take a set from eventual tournament champion TCU. A three-time all-league performer, Mankus led all players with a season-high 25 digs against the home Horned Frogs.
Army returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Hudson Valley rival Marist at 7 p.m. The midweek test precedes the inaugural Armed Forces Tournament at the Pentagon slated for next weekend, Sept. 7-8. The Black Knights are set to face Air Force, The Citadel and Denver over the two-day event in the nation's capital.
