Army Places Six On Patriot League Volleyball Academic Honor Roll

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Ariana Mankus, Lauren Wood and Alicia Dotson each earned a repeat nod, while junior Francine Vasquez and rookies Mary Vaccaro and Kristen Smeland found themselves on the 2011 Patriot League Volleyball Academic Honor Roll as announced by league officials on Tuesday. A total of 60 volleyball student-athletes were awarded the distinction.

To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the semester of their sport's competition.

A three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient, Mankus was a first team All-Patriot League performer in 2011. She was named Molten Patriot League Player of the Week twice last season and finished the year ranked second in the Patriot League with a 3.69 kills-per-set average. Mankus totaled 17 double-doubles, reached the 20-kill mark four times and enters her senior season riding a 10-match double-digit kill streak. The Lisle, Ill., native carries a 3.360 cumulative grade-point average in Art, Philosophy and Literature.

Wood garnered her second-straight honor roll citation with a 3.727 mark in Engineering Management. Wood played in 27 matches, primarily as a defensive specialist. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, she totaled 165 digs and 24 service aces in her second season with the Black Knights.

A two-year honor roll member, Dotson carries a 3.325 GPA in Human Geography. The junior setter was used primarily in the serving game last fall and totaled 16 service aces. Eleven of those aces came during Patriot League play, as Dotson drew playing time in 12 conference matches.

First-time honoree Vasquez posted a 3.495 GPA in Human Geography. A three-year starter, she averaged 1.71 kills and 1.57 digs per set last fall. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native played in all but one match and made 25 starts at right side hitter.

Authoring the highest GPA on the team in her plebe year at West Point, Vaccaro managed a 3.885 mark in her first semester. The Orinda, Calif., native capped a standout first season at Army with 2011 Patriot League Setter Of the Year honors to go with a first team all-league nod. Vaccaro led the Patriot League and ranked 17th in the nation averaging 11.42 assists per set. She totaled 20 double-doubles (assists, digs) on the season.

Rounding out Army's honor roll recipients, Smeland appeared in two matches during her first season at West Point. She also posted a 3.424 GPA in the fall.
