Army Closes Out Fall Play With 35 Victories

WEST POINT, N.Y.  – The Army women’s tennis team wrapped up a successful fall season as they finished up play in the Patriot League Kickoff 2013 hosted by Lehigh University. Eight Black Knight players sought out 35 victories in 36 matches between singles and doubles play on Saturday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 27. Army competed with conference rivals Lehigh and Lafayette in the first day of action and finished out the weekend versus Colgate and Lafayette.

The Black Knights opened the weekend with doubles competition versus tournament hosts, Lehigh, on Saturday morning. Three of four Black Knights teams found victories including the team of Elle Taylor and Carolyn Pitman and tandem of Hayley O’Connor and Nan Porter.

In singles play, Army had a 100 percent success rate as they tallied 14 out of 14 wins against Lehigh and Lafayette. In addition to Pitman, Hayley, Taylor and Porter, teammates Gabriella Spindler, and Taylor Brazell also found success on Saturday evening.

The victories continued to build on the second and final day of competition as Army went up against Colgate in both singles and doubles and versus Lafayette in doubles.  Play began at 10 a.m. against Colgate as Army sought out multiple wins to wrap up its weekend. Three teams including tandem of Taylor and Pitman, Spindler and Hayley, duo of Brazell and partner Maya Parker came out with 6-1 victories, while O’Connor and Porter managed a 6-3 win.

The second day of singles play panned out the same as the first as all eight Army players found wins over Colgate, before moving onto doubles versus Lafayette. Black Knight duo Brazell and Parker and team of O’Connor and Porter each surfaced with 6-0 victories while tandem of Taylor and Pitman managed a 6-3 victory and team of Hayley and Spindler took a 6-4 win.  

After closing out fall play this weekend, the Black Knights will return to action in January to compete in the Cornell Winter Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. The three day tournament is set to begin on Friday, Jan. 24, and continue through Sunday, Jan. 26. A full spring schedule will become available shortly and can be found on goARMYsports.com.
