WEST POINT, N.Y. - The top players in the Northeast region decent upon West Point this weekend to begin the five-day USTA/ITA Regional Championship, which begins on Friday morning at 8 a.m. The entire tournament, which features players from more than 40 schools, will be played at Army's state-of-the-art Lichtenberg Tennis Center and concludes on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Senior Erin Colton and junior Jamila Paul are slated to represent the Black Knights in both singles and doubles draws.

The single-elimination tournament, which includes a singles qualifying draw of 32 players on Friday, will feed winners of both singles and doubles into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Tournament. The prestigious event will be held Nov. 8-11 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., which is the site of the U.S. Open each year.

The ITA Regional Championships, currently sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools will participate in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.

"This tournament features the top players in the region and will be a great test for Erin and Jamila as we close-out the fall season," said Army head coach Paul Peck. "Hosting this tournament is such an honor for our program. It's a chance to welcome the best players in the region to one of the area's top facilities - the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. We're excited to get things underway on Friday."

While Colton earned a bye into the round of 64 singles main draw, Paul is seeded fifth in the singles qualifying draw. Paul will open the weekend against Jackie Raynor of Quinnipiac. Eight players out of the qualifying round will advance to the singles main draw, slated to begin on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Paul and Colton, Army's top doubles team with a 4-3 mark so far this fall, will team-up once again in the doubles main draw. One of 64 teams competing, Paul and Colton open the tournament against Kelsey Raynor and Joana Sun of Hudson Valley rival Marist.

Complete draws for both singles qualifying and doubles will be available at 2 p.m. today. Daily results throughout the weekend will be posted on Army's USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Central page, located on the women's tennis team page of www.goARMYsports.com.
