Hampton Rd/Old Dominion Result
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army women’s tennis team wrapped up a busy weekend during which players competed in the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., and the Hampton Roads/Old Dominion in Newport News, Va. Several players enjoyed success in both events, as the team split to partake in both tournaments.
After starting singles play in Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 5, players came back to fight for the championship title on Saturday, Oct. 6. Army’s Eva Sung took home the East Championship title in the Bill Fanney Singles Flight as she conquered four wins in two days. Sung began her winning streak with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Chowan’s Natayla Kamenschchikov in the first round. Sung moved onto the round of eight in which she went head-to-head with Army teammate Hayley O’Connor. Sung then advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 6-1, 6-3 win versus O’Connor. After registering two victories, she continued to dominate with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Old Dominion’s Melissa Esnal Olguin. Sung finished out the final round defeating Pence 6-1, 6-2. This is her first singles championship title of the season.
Over at the Lehigh Invitational, the other half of the Black Knights enjoyed success as they finished out both singles and doubles against Loyola.
In singles action, Army came away with eight individual wins from the Black Knights team members Jamila Paul, Carolyn Pitman, Gabriella Spindler, Della Taylor, Elle Taylor, Allyson Hayley, Margaret Iliev and Nan Porter.
All five of Army’s doubles teams also saw success as each came away with a four wins over Loyola and one over Lehigh. Sister team of Elle and Della Taylor carried out an 8-2 victory over Katelyn Hissong and Ania Krawiec. Duo Iliev and Pitman also came out on top as they defeated tandem of Tiffany Ash and Hagleigh Morgus, 8-0. Twosome of Paul and Beller added to the Black Knights winning streak as they fought for an 8-3 win over Megan Hahn and Olivia Ott. As Army teammates Hayley and Spindler topped the tandem of Alexandra Billups and Meredith Dwyer, 8-1, while duo Porter and Lorenzini came out with a 6-4 victory over Lehigh’s Taylor Hampshire and Nina Larazza.
