Women's Tennis Enjoys Solid Start To Fall Season

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women's tennis team is off to a solid start this fall, competing in invitational events at both Stony Brook and Quinnipiac this weekend. The results from day one included doubles action at Quinnipiac and the first round of play from Stony Brook.

Two doubles teams reached the quarterfinal round at Quinnipiac, including junior Jessica Ahn and senior Paige Ford. The pair opened the day with an 8-6 win over Seton Hall's Darcy Demers and Alexandra Harvey before falling to Quinnipiac's Adrienne Markison and Sarah Viebrock, 8-3, later in the afternoon. Also reaching the quarterfinals were freshman Kari Pope and junior Maria Casaletto. They started the day with an 8-3 win over Seton Hall's Liza Chu and Belfin Sunbul but later dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Julia Allen and Katie Moritz of Connecticut.

Playing in their first collegiate tournament, freshmen Morgen Kiser and Holly Pappafotis went 0-2 on the day, while juniors Annie Hang and Audrey Hansen went 1-1 with a win over Quinnipiac's Mary Wilson and Rachel Cantor (8-5) in the first round.

Moving to Stony Brook, N.Y., the Black Knights went 4-8 in the first day of doubles action. The Black Knights went head-to-head against Fairleigh Dickinson, Houston, Long Island and Stony Brook and recorded a 1-2 record against each opponent. Juniors Michael Tollerton and Robie Verano accounted for three of Army's four wins on the day.

In the first session, freshmen Erin Colton and Larraine Saavedra kicked-off their respective collegiate careers with a convincing 8-1 win over FDU's Prantl/Chernyshova.

Tollerton and  Verano then went to work in the next three sessions for the Black Knights.  The pair just edged Houston's Kazimieruk/Kacprzyk by a 9-8 score before defeating Long Island's Sjorgen/Blessington (9-7). A 7-3 win over Pieschl/Krishnan of Stony Brook kept Tollerton and Verano undefeated on the day.
