WEST POINT N.Y.  – The Army women’s tennis team closed out a busy weekend which players competed in the Stony Brook Invitational and Quinnipiac Invitational. Several players enjoyed success in both events, as the team split to partake in both tournaments.

Competing against 16 teams in total this weekend, Army saw two doubles teams advance to the semifinals game and one singles championship victory.

In Flight A at Quinnipiac, Margaret Iliev and Carolyn Pitman registered wins on both Friday and Saturday for the championship win. After defeating Seton Hall’s Kaldan and Gaurda, the Army duo collected a win over Quinnipiac’s team of Rachel Horton and Sydney Young, 8-7. The Black Knights pulled out a 9-7 over Seton Hall’s Terry Alderman and Sarah Weinberg win for the A doubles championship title.

Playing out of the D singles bracket, freshman Taler Brazell rounded out the Quinnipiac championship title for Army in her collegiate debut. After a 6-2, 6-2, decision against Navy’s Vivian Chau, Brazell moved on to capture a quarterfinal victory of 1-7, 7-6, 10-5 versus Seton Hall’s Wardius. Brazel then went on to defeat Providence’s Amanda Pittocco 6-1, 6-4, for the D singles championship title.

Two hours south, the rest of the Black Knights joined players from eight other schools in the Stony Brook Invitational.

In Flight A doubles, Jamila Paul and Gabriella Spindler advanced to the championship round after an 8-2 victory over Rhode Island’s Galina Chernykh and Taylor Holden on Saturday. The duo suffered a loss in the championship round in a 8-6 decision against Fordham’s tandem of Elliesa Ball and Sarah Ali.

In singles backdraw competition, Black Knights rounded out multiple victories. Playing out of Flight B drawbacks, the Taylor sisters went head-to-head in the championship match. After they each beating players from Navy and Fordham 8-1, Ella and Della Taylor played for the win. After an 8-2 decision, Della Taylor took the Flight B drawback champion title. In Flight C drawbacks, Army’s Hayley O’Connor and Alyssa Gleason registered two wins before playing against one another in the championship round.

The Black Knights will play next at home in the West Point Invitational which starts on Friday, Sept. 27, and continues until Sunday, Sept. 29. Army will host ten teams at the outdoor West Point Tennis courts. Additional information on the tournament will be released later in the week on goARMYsports.com.
