WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women's tennis team held its end-of-the-year awards ceremony last week, where 18th-year head coach Paul Peck announced award winners for the 2013-14 campaign. Peck also introduced next season's team captains, with juniors Alyssa Hanson and Elle Taylor being selected to lead the Black Knights in 2014-15.
Hanson has posted eight singles wins during her first three seasons on the team. Despite missing time due to injury, Hanson recorded a pair of wins during the fall of her junior campaign and served as a strong motivator to teammates when not on the court.
Taylor led Army with 25 overall singles wins this season, while showing a 12-6 mark in dual matches. Taylor saw time at the Nos. 3, 4, 5 positions, but played the most matches (10) at No. 5, where she was 7-3. She also posted a 27-11 record in doubles action, including an 18-8 finish in duals. Taylor and her sister, Della combined to finish second on the team with 21 doubles victories, competing for the majority of the season at the top doubles spot.
The Black Knights will say goodbye to seniors Margaret Iliev, Jamila Paul, Carly Riney and Della Taylor, who will graduate later this month. Army looks to return a number of strong players from 2013-14, including all-league performers sophomore Carolyn Pitman and freshman Nancy Porter.
