Watch Interview With Della Taylor
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Twenty-four hours after being named the Patriot League Tournament's Most Valuable Player, junior Della Taylor became the second women's tennis player to earn Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors on Monday.
Taylor didn't lose a contest on the weekend and provided the match-clinching point in the Black Knights' 4-1 win over rival Navy on Sunday to capture the program's ninth-straight Patriot League title and 14th overall.
The Redondo Beach, Calif., native joined an impressive list of Army players who have taken home the John "Pat" Rooney Award as the championship's MVP. A Black Knight has won the award every season since 2005.
Taylor's 6-1, 6-0 singles win in Saturday's semifinal victory over Colgate happened just as the Black Knights had already clinched the match. The two-time All-Patriot League performer shined in Sunday's championship, teaming with younger sister Elle to help Army win the doubles point at No. 1. With the Black Knights just one point away from securing the title and three matches still ongoing, the elder Taylor dialed in to beat Navy's Katie Porter 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the sixth flight.
Taylor joins freshman Carolyn Pitman as the only two women's tennis players to be named AAA Athlete of the Week in 2012-13. She is 7-3 in her last 10 singles matches and carries a three-match win streak into the postseason.
Making its 13th appearance, Army will take a 22-6 record into the NCAA Tournament. The first rounds are set to be played May 10 and 11 with the field being set April 30 at 5:30 p.m. ET as a part of the NCAA Championship Selection Show on NCAA.com.
