Black Knights Head Into PL Tournament As No. 2 Seed

April 17, 2014

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women's tennis team will look to continue its success in the Patriot League Tournament this weekend, as it heads to Bucknell for the four-day event. The Black Knights enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Colgate in a quarterfinal match on Friday at 2 p.m.

Army (21-3, 7-1 PL) enters the weekend having won each of the last nine Patriot League Tournament Championships, and 13 of the last 15. Overall the Black Knights have collected 14 conference titles. Army defeated Navy, 4-1, in last year's final at West Point. This year's tournament will be contested at Bucknell's Varsity Tennis Courts in Lewisburg, Pa., with the West Branch Tennis Club in Williamsport, Pa., serving as backup venue in the event of inclement weather.

Joining Army and Colgate in the nine-team field are top-seeded Boston University, No. 3 Navy, No. 4 Bucknell, No. 5 Lehigh, No. 6 Loyola, No. 8 Lafayette and No. 9 Holy Cross. Lafayette and Holy Cross will play on Thursday afternoon for the right to advance to the quarterfinals against Boston University. This season marks Boston University and Loyola's first campaign in the Patriot League.

Army is coming off just its third setback of the season, falling to a 7-0 defeat at Boston University on Sunday, April 13. The Black Knights' No. 2 doubles pairing on senior Jamila Paul and sophomore Carolyn Pitman collected an 8-5 victory, while freshman Nancy Porter came the closest to taking a singles decision, slipping 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 at the sixth position.

Prior to the Boston University match, Army had won five in a row, with four of those victories coming against Patriot League competition. Pitman has been the team's top singles performer in dual matches this year, posting a 14-4 record, while Paul and Porter have each gone 13-5. Paul and Pitman have teamed up to form the Black Knights' most-successful doubles pairing, as the duo went 20-0 during the spring season. Also notching double-digit wins in doubles action are senior Della Taylor and junior Elle Taylor, who are 12-7.
