WEST POINT, N.Y. -
With the start of the 2013 Patriot League Tournament just 10 days away, the Army women's tennis team will play two home matches in final preparation for championship weekend. The Black Knights close out the regular season against NJIT on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and Albany on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Patriot League Tournament will take place April 26-28 at West Point. By virtue of locking up the No. 1 seed, Army earned a first-round bye and will not play until the semifinal round on Saturday, April 27.
Coming off a 7-0 win at Bucknell last Saturday, the Black Knights improved to 19-5 overall and finished 6-0 in Patriot League action. It marked the program's 11th-straight undefeated conference regular season under head coach Paul Peck. Army blanked Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, Colgate and Holy Cross during the regular season. Their only point surrendered was to Navy in a 6-1 victory.
Freshman Gabriella Spindler, who is riding a four-match win streak, leads the team in singles wins and is sporting a 24-7 mark this year. The 24 victories tie for 10th in Army's single-season wins list. Junior Jamila Paul is sitting on a 21-6 record on the year.
Paul and senior co-captain Erin Colgate are a team-best 19-7 in doubles, while Pitman and junior Margaret Iliev have also reached double digits wins and are 15-5. Sisters Della and Elle Taylor are 13-9 in doubles play.
NJIT brings an 11-6 overall record into Wednesday afternoon's affair. The Highlanders are coming off back-to-back wins over Villanova and St. Joseph's. The Black Knights and NJIT have met every season since 2008 with Army holding a 4-1 lead in the series. The Highlanders' only win came in a 4-3 decision last season at West Point.
Saturday's match against Albany will be Army's Senior Day as Colton, Larraine Saavedra, Morgen Kiser, Kari Pope and Holly Pappafotis are honored prior to the start. Albany is 7-12 overall and suffered a pair of road losses last weekend at Hofstra and Stony Brook. Army holds a 17-1 lead in the all-times series, which dates back to the program's first season in 1979.
