Tennis And Track & Field Players Share AAA Athlete Of The Week

April 7, 2014

WEST POINT, N.Y. - A pair of Army juniors were honored as this week's Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday. Samantha Reid of the women's track & field team and classmate Elle Taylor of the women's tennis squad share the award following their performances in wins over Navy this past weekend.

On Saturday, Reid helped the Black Knights clinch the "Star" Meet to snap an 11-meet skid against their service academy rivals, last winning an outdoor meet in the series back in 2008. Army entered the final event, the 4x400 relay, with a 98.5-96.5 lead, which allowed Navy an opportunity to tie with a win in the event. In the anchor leg, Reid made up Army's deficit to capture a 103.5-99.5 victory for the hosts. The junior was joined by senior Alexandra Sutherland, junior Katrina Donarski and freshman Madaline Kenyon in the 4x400 relay squad.

The native of Colorado Springs, Colo., added to her strong relay performance with a win in the 100-meter dash (12.88) and a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash. Reid's 200-meter time of 25.80 marked the quickest by an Army runner this season.

On the tennis court, Taylor went 4-0 in singles and doubles matches, helping the Black Knights posted road wins over Navy (4-3) and Loyola (7-0). Taylor partnered with her sister, senior Della Taylor, for an 8-5 win at the top doubles position against the Midshipmen on April 5 before clinching the win with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) decision at the No. 5 singles flight.

In the Loyola match, the Redondo Beach, Calif., native contributed to an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 double spot alongside freshman Nancy Porter. Taylor helped the Black Knights record a shutout in the match, with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Loyola's Katelyn Hissong at the No. 3 position.

Next up for the women's track & field squad is the Army 5-Way on Saturday, April 12, which will take place at Shea Stadium. The women's tennis team (20-2, 6-0 Patriot League) is back in action on Saturday to host Bucknell in a Senior Day match at 11 a.m.
