Army Picked Second In Patriot League Preseason Poll

Jan. 15, 2014

WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Looking to capture its 14th Patriot League Championship under head coach Paul Peck this season, the Army women’s tennis team earned the number two spot in the Patriot League preseason poll. Released on Wednesday afternoon, the conference's head coaches and sports information directors each cast one vote.

The Black Knights earned seven first place votes behind Boston University who earned 120 points and 11 first place votes. Academy rival Navy, which Army defeated a season ago for its tenth-straight Patriot League title, trailed the Black Knights earning 103 points. Bucknell took the number four spot with 83 points, followed by Colgate (62), Loyola (59), Lehigh (56), Lafayette (27) and Holy Cross (19) in order.

“The Patriot League continues to get stronger every year,” said Army head coach Paul Peck. “While it is flattering to be voted towards the top of some great teams, we can’t put a ton of stock in the preseason poll. Our goal for this season is to continue to stay strong, prove what we have on the court and making it back to the Patriot League tournament.

Army won its ninth consecutive Patriot League title last season, and look to continue a decade of dominance in 2014. The Black Knights went 22-7 a year ago, were unbeaten in league play (5-0) and won two matches in the conference tournament to secure a 13th title overall.

After more than a month-long layoff, the Black Knights return to the court at the Cornell Winter Invitational, Jan. 24-26, in Ithaca, N.Y. Army will host 20 of its dual matches at home this season, and will travel to Annapolis, Md., for a highly anticipated rematch against Navy on April 5.
