Women's Tennis Splits Saturday Afternoon Matches

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army women’s tennis split a pair of Saturday afternoon matches, defeating St. Bonaventure at home, 5-2, but falling to Massachusetts in Amherst, 6-1. The split puts Army at 7-3 on the season, while UMass jumps to 5-3 and the Bonnies fall to 2-2.

Coming off a loss at Rutgers Friday afternoon, the same lineup took the courts against the Minutewomen. UMass swept the doubles point to pull ahead 1-0, before snagging 5-of-6 singles contests.

Sophomore Jamila Paul earned Army’s lone point on the afternoon, topping Yuliana Motyl, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Paul improved to 9-7 on the season and 5-3 in dual matches.

Meanwhile at Lichtenberg Tennis Center, Army won 2-of-3 doubles contests to snag the first point of the match. Junior Kari Pope and sophomore Morgen Kiser improved to 4-0 on the year with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, topping Riley Archer and Kathryn Kvas. Sophomore Carly Riney and freshman Alyssa Gleason captured their first win of the season, defeating Amanda Pallikunnel and Marissa Broassard, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play, Gleason and Pope won their respective matches as well. Gleason defeated Brossard, 7-5, 6-4, for her fourth straight win, while Pope knocked off Kvas, 6-4, 6-1, for her first dual match win of the season.

The Black Knights improved their all-time lead over the Bonnies to 5-0, while dropping to 12-5 all-time against the Minutewomen.

Up next for the Black Knights, Army will return to West Point for its third home weekend tripleheader of the season when it hosts St. John’s, Fairleigh Dickinson and Bryant Feb. 24-25.
