Army Captures Two Wins In Weekend Match-Ups

WEST POINT, N.Y.  – The Army women’s tennis team played host to St. Bonaventure, Rutgers and Siena this Sunday as the Black Knights played from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. While Army (8-1) came away with a 4-3 victory over the Bonnies and a 6-1 win over Siena, the Black Knights suffered its first loss of the season after being defeated 7-0 by Rutgers.

In the first and closest match of the day, the Black Knights swept doubles play with teams of Elle and Della Taylor and duo of Nan Porter and Allyson Hayley each capturing 8-0 wins. In singles play, Army’s Caroline Lorenzini clinched the match with a three-set win over St. Bonaventure’s Taylor Cole. After falling to a 6-4 decision in the first set, the freshman Black Knights player came back to win sets two and three, 6-3.

While Army came up empty versus Rutgers on Sunday afternoon, doubles team of Jamila Paul and Carolyn Pitman maintained their undefeated streak, capturing an 8-7 (2) win over Lindsey Balasmo and Mariam Zein.

In its third match of the day, the Black Knights came back to claim its eighth victory of the season over Siena, winning the match 6-1. All of Army’s doubles teams came through victorious, claiming the first point of the match, while Siena’s lone point came from singles play. Freshman Allyson Hayley highlighted the match for Army, going into three-sets with Mitsuki Fukmachi after collecting an 8-0 win with Porter in doubles action. Hayley came out to capture the first set 7-6 (8), before falling to Fukmachi 0-6 in the second. The freshman went on to capture the match with a 10-8 victory in the third and final set.

Army continues its rigorous homestand, as it will host three matches next weekend. The Black Knights will begin competition with a double-header versus FDU-Florham and Albany on Friday, Feb. 22 and will close out the weekend on Saturday, Feb. 23 against St. John’s. All three matches will be played at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
