WEST POINT, N.Y. - While the Army women's tennis team opened its dual match season with a pair of wins on Friday evening, the road was not an easy one as the Black Knights faced tough opponents all day long. After picking up a 6-1 win over Binghamton in the first match, Army outlasted Sacred Heart, 4-3, in a marathon match lasting nearly four hours at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Plenty of impressive wins peppered Friday's events, but none were bigger than freshman Haley O'Connor notching back-to-back three-set victories against foes from both Binghamton and Sacred Heart. Her thrilling 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over the Pioneers' Paige Olson clinched the Black Knights victory and ended the night. O'Connor also teamed with fellow rookie Evan Sung to capture an 8-6 third doubles win over Sacred Heart, meaning the Park Ridge, Ill., got plenty of action on opening day.
Along with O'Connor's victory, all but one of the singles matches required three sets to decide. Complete results from both matches are below.
The Black Knights have little time to rest, as they host Seton Hall on Saturday for an 11 a.m. match.
