BOSTON, Mass. - Army women's tennis opened its spring season this weekend as the squad split between a dual match at Boston University and the Cornell Winter Invite tournament. The Black Knights fell at BU 7-0, while totaling a record of 4-11 in singles and 3-5 in doubles in Ithaca.
The Terriers (1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. Army's (0-1) pair of junior Erin Colton and sophomore Jamila Paul gave BU the tightest doubles match of the day as the Black Knights fell, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot to Stefanie Nunic and Sami Lieb.
BU dominated the singles matches, cruising to wins in straight sets in all six contests. Freshman Elle Taylor won the most individual games for Army as the Redondo Beach, Calif., native fell to Jessi Linero, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 5 position.
With the win, the Terriers improved to 8-0 all-time against the Black Knights. Army dropped to 6-12 in spring season openers under 18th-year head coach Paul Peck, with all 12 losses coming on the road.
At Cornell, Army struggled in the main draws, getting bounced to the consolation brackets after suffering first-round losses to competitors from Cornell, Columbia, Binghamton and Colgate. The Black Knights found more success in the consolation brackets, totaling a 4-4 record in singles matches and 3-2 in doubles.
Highlighting the doubles consolation bracket was a run to the Flight B title match by junior Kari Pope and freshman Alyssa Hanson. Pope and Hanson defeated a pair of Patriot League foes to advance to the championship match. The Army duo knocked of Colgate's Merideth Rock and Amanda Golden, 8-4, before defeating the Raiders' Becky Silvers and Jackie Finn, 8-1.
The Army pair lost in the finals, 8-5, to Columbia's Chelsea Davis and Amy Li, 8-5.
Army will begin a series of six consecutive dual matches on its home courts of Lichtenberg Tennis Center, starting Friday, Feb. 3 with a doubleheader against Binghamton (3 p.m.) and Sacred Heart (7 p.m.).
