ITHACA, N.Y. - Seeing its first action in nearly three months, the Army women's tennis team faired well in the opening day of the Cornell Winter Invitational at the Reis Tennis Center. The Black Knights collected six first singles wins and three first doubles victories on Friday.
In singles action senior co-captain Jamila Paul made quick work of Seton Hall's Sarah Hellstern by a 6-4, 6-2 score. Army teammate senior Della Taylor also moved onto the second round of play in the A singles bracket with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Binghamton's Annie DiMuro.
Four Black Knights will move onto the second round of play in the B single bracket including freshman Ally Hayley who received a first-round bye. Sophomore Hayley O'Connor recorded a win over Seton Hall's Anna Guryanova (6-3, 6-0, 1-0(6) as she will advance to the second day of play. Junior Elle Taylor and freshman Nan Porter dominated the first round on Friday as Taylor collected a 6-0, 6-2 win over Niagara's Iva Celan and Porter came out on top of Binghamton's Alexis Tashiro, 6-0, 6-1.
In the doubles A bracket, Army duo of Paul and sophomore Caroline Pitman will compete in the quarterfinal round of play on Saturday with back-to-back wins on day one. The Black Knights collected its first win over Seton Hall's Hannah Liljevist and Madison Shoemaker, 6-3, and then moved on to its second triumph in round two over Niagara's Sarah Hellstern and Brooke Briseno (6-0).
Two Army teams will get a chance to play in the quarterfinal round of the B doubles bracket after each had a bye the first-round. Senior co-captain and Margaret Iliev and senior Carly Riney came together to beat out Binghamton's Agatha Ambrozy and Shea Brodsky, 6-3, while teammates Lorenzini and O'Connor came together to collect a 6-4 win over Niagara's Ashley Ta and Maria Ortiz.
Play resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. and will conclude with Sunday's finals. Please check back for results as they become available.
