NCAA Tournament Bracket
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army (35-24), coming off of winning its first Patriot League title in 11 years and fifth overall, learned its NCAA Regional destination Sunday evening for the 2013 NCAA Division I Softball Tournament.
The Black Knights are headed to Austin, Texas, to take on No. 4 national seed Texas Friday evening at Red & Charline McCombs Field with game times for Friday, Saturday and Sunday to be announced as soon as they are available. Houston and South Carolina round out the four-team Austin Regional field.
Army, making its third trip to the regionals and first since 2002, will open up against the Longhorns (44-8), who earned their ninth straight berth to the NCAA Tournament and 14th overall. Texas advanced to the NCAA Super Regional for the third time in school history last year.
Army and Texas will be meeting for the third time in program history with the Longhorns holding a 2-0 lead in the series. Texas defeated Army in the opening round of the 2002 Region 5 Tournament in Norman, Okla., in the Black Knights' last trip to the NCAAs. Army went on to win its first-ever NCAA matchup in the next round with a 2-0 defeat of Utah. Two years later, Army and the Longhorns met at the prestigious NFCA Leadoff Classic with the Black Knights suffering a 6-3 defeat.
Army's second opponent at the tournament will come out of the matchup between Houston (40-18) and South Carolina (32-23) in what will be the first-ever meeting between South Carolina and third versus Houston. The Black Knights played the Cougars at the Crowne Plaza Classic in 2008, losing twice in five innings, 9-0 and 10-1.
Army has four players from the state of Texas in senior co-captain Alex Reynolds (Katy), juniors Amanda Nguyen (Houston) and Marina Northup (San Antonio) along with freshman Callie West (Houston).
