WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Junior Amanda Nguyen and freshman Christian McKone were tabbed the Patriot League's Player of the Week and Rookie of the Rookie, respectively, by the conference office on Monday. It was first time for both this season and career fifth for Nguyen, who picked up her second citation as a player after earning three as a rookie.
Nguyen stole seven bases last week to become the Patriot League's single-season (36) and career leader (82). The junior outfielder had three stolen bases in Army's 8-1 win on Saturday against Fairleigh Dickson in tying her game-high mark for the fourth time this season.
The native of Houston, Texas, collected four hits batting .267 last week to break her own school single-season mark with 76, which is two shy of the league's mark. Nguyen first set the school mark of 70 hits her freshman year and tied it last year, while her 216 career hits lists third on Army's all-time chart, four shy of second place.
Nguyen also broke her school single-season mark for runs scored with 43, shattering her record of 41 set last year. She also leads the Black Knights with a .378 batting average.
McKone, who was twice selected as an honorable mention before copping her first weekly honor as a rookie, batted safely in all four games last week leading Army with a .400 batting average (6-for-15) along with four runs scored. The native of Bonney Lake, Wash., scored three runs going 2-for-4 in Army's 8-1 win over FDU. She scored the first run of the game and tallied a run in her final two at bats after smacking base hits en route to batting safely in nine of the last 10 games.
The freshman outfielder is the team leader in walks (20) and triples (two), is second in stolen bases (12), third in runs scored (33) and tied for third in batting average (.321), while fourth in hits (52). She is one of five players, along with Nguyen, to draw starts in all 54 games.
Army is back in action on Thursday, May 9, when the second-seeded Black Knights take on No. 3 Bucknell in a first-round game of the Patriot League's Tournament being hosted by regular-season champion Lehigh.
The Black Knights and Bison square off at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday following the tournament's opener at 12 between No. 1 Lehigh and No. 4 Colgate in the first game of the double-elimination tournament.
On Friday (May 10), the winners from the two opening rounds meet in Game 3 starting at 11 a.m. followed by Game 4 between the losers of Thursday's games meeting in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m.
The final game (Game 5) on Friday is at 4 p.m. between the winner of Game 4 versus the loser of Game 3 to decide who advances to Saturday's championship round.
The Patriot League Tournament concludes Saturday with the two remaining teams (winner of Game 3 vs. the winner of Game 5) vying for the league's title and NCAA berth. The first game is at 12 p.m. with the second scheduled for 2 p.m. if necessary.
