GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Taylor McCoy blasted a three-run homer to cap a five-run third-inning rally as Hampton downed Army, 6-1, after erasing an early 1-0 deficit, in closing out the second day of the three-day Spartan Classic being hosted by UNC Greensboro at UNCG SB Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Army (0-8) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an unearned run. Leadoff batter Amanda Nygen got on board after reaching on an error and motored to second base on a stolen base. She moved to third on April Ortenzo's bunt single and scored on Alee Rashenskas' fielder's choice.
Kasey McCravey followed with an infield hit to load the bases. Winner Jailynn Jackson (2-3), who went the distance on a four hitter, struck out six and issued one walk, nipped Army's rally with three straight strikeouts, the last looking.
Jackson did not allow Army in scoring position the rest of the game scattering her final two hits, both in the infield, in the third (Rashenskas) and fifth (Savanna Aversa) innings, along with her lone walk in the sixth.
After being held to just one hit over the first two innings by Army starter Caroline Smith (0-3), the Lady Pirates exploded for five runs on five hits with one out in the top of the third inning in chasing her.
Kristen West took over the circle and held Hampton hitless until the seventh inning when they collected two hits off her and an unearned run.
McCravey's hit in her first at bat stretched her hitting streak, dating back to last year, to 12 straight games.
Army closes out competition at the Spartan Classic against George Washington Sunday at 9 a.m.
