LEWISBURG, Pa. -
Freshman RHP Morgan Lashley recorded both wins in Army's Patriot League doubleheader sweep of Bucknell Saturday afternoon at Becker Field. The Black Knights overcame an early 1-0 deficit for a 5-1 win in the opener, and were led to a 6-3 nightcap decision with Amanda Nguyen and Ali Cleinmark each knocking in a pair of runs.
The Black Knights improved to 7-3 in the conference and 24-15 overall, while the Bison slipped to 6-27 and 0-10 in the league.
Army battled back from a 1-0 first inning deficit in the opener capitalizing on four hits and three walks in plating four runs in the top of the fifth for a 4-1 lead, then added another run in the seventh.
Alexis AuBuchon's bases-loaded walk with one out in the fifth tied the game 1-1. AuBuchon was one of three runs that scored off of run-scoring singles by Marina Northup Ali Cleinmark and Rachael Duval as the Black Knights sent 11 batters to that plate in that frame.
Alex MacLean (3-17), who yielded seven hits and seven walks going the distance in being tagged with the loss, left bases loaded in getting out of the inning on a strikeout. She retired five straight batters before Army touched her for another run.
With one out in the top of the seventh, MacLean walked Northup, who gave way to pinch runner Ashton Wolf. Senior Reanna Johnson's RBI double to left field chased Wolf home as Army padded its lead to 5-1.
Bucknell's bats were kept quiet as Lashley (20-11), who went the distance on a five hitter, striking out four and walking two, scattered three hits over the final six frames after yielding a solo home run to Meredith Dickson in the bottom of the first.
After the freshman hurler worked her way out jams with runner at third in the second inning on a flyout to left field and at second base on a strikeout looking in the third, she did not allow a Bison into scoring position the rest of the way. Lashley retired 11 of the final 14 batters she faced scattering two hits along with a walk.
In the nightcap decision, Army scored a run in the second inning and two more in the third in staking Lashley to a 3-0 lead. Nguyen's sacrifice fielder's choice RBI delivered Clara Navarra for a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Black Knights added two more runs on four hits in the third inning keyed by Cleinmark's two-run double that stretched Army's lead to 3-0. With one out, Johnson's double moved Marina Northup, who beat out an infield hit, to third base and both crossed on Cleinmark's second double of the season.
Duval's single advanced Cleinmark to third and she moved to second on the throw home along with knocking out starter Courtney Conover, who was touched for seven hits and three runs over 2.1 innings. MacLean took over the circle and retired the next two batters in stranding Cleinmark and Duval in scoring position.
Bucknell chipped away at Army's lead with a run in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to draw to 3-2, but that was a close as the Bison would come.
Army added three more runs in to the top of the fifth to stretch its lead to 6-2 with two of the runs scored on bunts sandwiched around an RBI single. Johnson led off the inning with a single up the middle, stole second base, moved to third on a fielder's choice groundout and crossed on Duval's fielder's choice sacrifice bunt.
Duval advanced to second when Navarro drew a walk and came around to score when Ortenzo laced a single to the gap in left field. Navarro moved to third on that play and was delivered for the second time on a bunt by Nguyen.
After issuing a walk to the first batter she faced in the bottom of the fifth, Lashley turned over the circle to classmate Jules Steurer. The freshman RHP struck out the first two batters she faced, and after issuing her lone walk over the 3.0 innings she pitched, retired the side on a fielder's choice groundout.
Steuer got into a jam in the seventh after loading the bases with a hit batsman, a single and an error with one out. After yielding her second hit of the game, a RBI single to pinch hitter Sophia Geraci, Steurer denied the Bison as the Black Knights turned a double play.
Army collected 12 hits off Bucknell's pitchers with Ortenzo, Reynolds, AuBuchon and Johnson each going 2-for-4 as eight Black Knights collected hits. Johnson and Navarro each scored a pair of runs.
Army and Bucknell close the four-game league series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Live stats are provided on both Army's (www.goARMYsports.com) and Bucknell's websites.
