PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
Army's softball team collected eight hits, including back-to-back RBI doubles by Kasey McCravey and Alex Reynolds in a four-run fifth, to take a 5-1 first game decision, but the host Dragons gained the split with pitcher Shelby Taylor (2-for-3 with five RBI) helping her own cause with a "walk off" grand slam in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-3 nightcap decision.
In the opener, the Black Knights (19-16) collected three hits in the top of the first inning in taking a 1-0 lead on April Ortenzo's bases-loaded walk. That lead stood until the bottom of the fourth when Drexel got the run back to tie the game 1-1 on Jenn Reading's RBI double.
The Black Knights snapped the tie in the top of the fourth inning collecting three straight hits with one out. McCravey's one-out double to right center field drove in Alex Gaff, who led off with a walk, for the tie-breaking run.
McCravey (2-for-4) crossed on Reynolds' (2-for-3) double to center field followed by Marina Northup's RBI single in delivering the third run. After moving around on a groundout and single by Bernadette McKone (2-for-4), Northup scored on a muffed throw by the second base following McKone's stolen base for a four-run lead.
RHP Morgan Lashley (15-10) threw a two-hitter, struck out five, walked three and yielded one run pitching six innings to post the decision with Jewels Steurer tossing the final seventh inning. After yielding two base hits, Steurer got out unscathed on a strikeout swinging in stranding both runners as Army left seven on base.
In the nightcap, Drexel used the long ball to earn the split with the Black Knights. After the Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Jess O'Hara's one-out solo blast, Army rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning behind McCravey's two-run blast with two outs in smacking her team-leading fourth round tripper of the season.
The Black Knights padded their lead to 3-1 with designated player Bernadette Cardon's double delivering McKone, who singled with two outs and moved to third on a fielding error by the center fielder.
Cardon stole third and Paige Vallejos drew a walk off Taylor (4-10), but the Drexel pitcher induced the next batter to fly out to left field en route to retiring nine straight batters before being touched for her fifth hit of the game, a double by Gaff with two outs in the top of the seventh.
With Army holding a slim 3-2 lead after Drexel scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Taylor struck out the next batter on her fifth strikeout of the game.
The Dragons (11-26) rallied in the bottom of the seventh scoring five runs on five hits off Braetana Roy (4-6), who had worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. With one out in the seventh, Hanna Parrish's bloop single with bases loaded delivered the tying run (3-3).
Taylor came to the plate and unloaded a bases-clearing homer in lifting her team to the win and snapping loose from a seven-game losing streak.
McCravey, McKone, Reynolds and Amanda Nguyen collected hits in both games. McCravey and McKone went 3-for-7 with McCravey driving in three runs and scoring twice, Reynolds was 2-for-6 with an RBI and run scored, McKone scored a run while Nguyen was 2-for-7 with a run scored
Army returns to its Patriot League schedule this weekend when the Black Knights travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on defending champion and preseason favorite Lehigh in a four-game series.
