HOUSTON, Texas -
Senior hurler Deidre Outon threw a four-hit shutout and host Houston posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth in a 6-0 defeat of Army as the Black Knights (0-4) closed out the second day of the Houston Classic.
After Army drew a walk and hit by Kasey McCravey to put runners in the corners in its first at-bat in the top of the first inning, Outon got out unscathed.
Freshman hurler Caroline Smith, drawing her second start at the tournament, stranded runners in scoring position in Houston's first two at bats.
The Cougars capitalized on a pair of hits and an error in the bottom of the third inning to stake Outon to a 2-0 lead. Selena Hernandez, 3-for-4 with an RBI and run score, doubled home the second run.
Outon (1-0) did not allow Army into scoring position over the final four innings. She walked a batter and issued just one hit over the fourth and fifth frames, then retired the side in the sixth and seventh innings in recording her first win of the season.
Houston scored four runs on five hits in the fifth inning to chase Smith. Haley Outon drove in a run and scored on Kendra Cullum's (2-for-3) RBI single to center field with Tiffany McKnight closing out the scoring on a two-out solo blast to right center
After taking over the circle, freshman Kristen West induced the next batter to ground out to the second baseman for the final out, then retired the side in the bottom of the sixth.
Army closes out the tournament when it takes on Houston Sunday morning 11:30 a.m. (Central). McCravey is batting .538 at the tournament (7-for-13) with two RBI and two runs scored.
