AUBURNA, Ala. -
Marina Northrup, Rae Anne Payleitner and Bernadette Cardon each drove in a pair of runs and freshman right-hander Braetana Roy went the distance in her collegiate start as Army defeated Austin Peay, 10-3, at the Plainsman Invitational at Jane B. Moore Field. The Black Knights (1-2) rapped out a season-high 12 hits en route to their first win of the young season.
Army jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Austin Peay capitalized on a pair of Black Knight errors to score twice in the top of the third inning, then tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning.
The Black Knights exploded for seven runs in their final two plate appearances plating four runs on four hits in the fifth to snap the 3-3 tie, and put the game out of reach with three more runs in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, freshman Kasey McCravey, 2-for-3 with two runs scored, singled up the center with one out. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and moved to second on ground out. Northup's RBI double to right field drove home McCravey for the tie-breaking run. Northup, 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, raced home on Payleitner's single to left field for Army's second run in that frame.
After Payleitner gave way to freshman pinch runner Alyssa Strobehn, freshman Paige Vallejos and sophomore Ali Cleinmark were both hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch hitter Bernadette Cardon knocked in Strobehn and Vallejos with her single to center field to put Army in front 7-3 off starter Morgan Brewer (0-1).
The Black Knights padded their lead with three more runs off reliever Taylor Mills in the sixth inning, who walked three of the nine batters she faced. With one out, McCravey drew a walk and advanced to second on Alex Reynolds' infield hit. Northup's walk loaded the bases with Payleitner's fielder's choice RBI knocking in McCravey. With two outs, Vallejos knocked in Reynolds with an RBI single.
After Army reloaded the bases on Vallejos hit, freshman Christian McKone's bases-loaded walk closed out the scoring as the Black Knights recorded a season-high 10 runs.
Roy (1-0) was superb in going the distance in the circle for the first time after pitching an inning in relief in Army's opener against Furman. The freshman from Avondale, Ariz., was touched for eight hits, three runs, just two earned, walked four and stroke out one.
Roy stranded a runner in the sixth after being touched for two hits and did not allow a runner in scoring position in the seventh after the Lady Govs tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth.
McCravey, Reynolds, Northup and Cleinmark stroked two hits apiece with Amanda Nguyen, Payleitner, Vallejos and Cardon collecting one each.
The Black Knights take on East Tennessee State in their second game of the day and fourth at the Plainsman Invitational.
