WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore Joey Molacek was selected as the Army Athletic Association "Athlete of the Week" for her performance over the weekend as the Black Knights captured the 2011 Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Molacek was one of four Army players named to the all-tournament team, along with being chosen the MVP. She is just the third Black Knight to earn tournament MVP honors, joining Tara Williams (1993) and Sarah Gos (2008), both members of Army's Silver Anniversary Team.
Fourth-seeded Army upset top seed and host Colgate, 2-0, in the semifinals with Molacek scoring both goals, early and late, to lead the Black Knights into the championship round for the third time in the last four league title matches.
Molacek beat the Colgate keeper with a high shot into the right corner of the net from the top of the box just 5:26 into the game, then put the game away with a goal in the waning seconds as Army defeated the Raiders for the fourth time in the last seven meetings.
A second team all-league selection as a midfielder this year, Molacek ranks second on the team in goals with five, along with a pair of game winners, to include a penalty kick conversion. Army's 28 goals this year is its highest output since scoring 35 in 2005.
Army then defeated No. 3 Navy, 2-0, in the championship match to secure its second league title in four years and third overall for its second NCAA tournament appearance.
The Black Knights last title came in 2008 in a 1-0 OT upset win over top-seeded Navy that earned Army its first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament and first crown since 1993.
Army is just the second No. 4 seed to win the league title since Bucknell accomplished that feat in the finals in 2005.
Army will learn its NCAA Tournament destination at 4:30 p.m., Monday afternoon when the tournament field is unveiled during the selection show being streamed on NCAA.com starting at 4:30 p.m.
