Army Battles Lehigh To 0-0 Double OT Draw In Patriot League Debut

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Host Lehigh held a 21-6 shot advantage and Army had the lone two shots of the overtime period, but neither team could penetrate as the Patriot League defending champion Black Knights battled the Mountain Hawks to a 0-0 double overtime draw in the conference opener Friday evening at Ulrich Sports Complex.

The tie is the second this season for Army (5-4-2, 0-0-1 PL) as well as Lehigh (6-2-2, 0-0-1) and third in the all-time series which the Black Knights lead by a 13-4-3 advantage.

Though being outshot 9-2 in the first half, Army's attempts by Liz Betterbed and Candice Bryan were on goal with Lauren Mains making the stops at the same time Black Knight keeper Alex Lostetter was keeping Lehigh off the scoreboard following back-to-back rejections just prior to halftime.

The Mountain Hawks outshot Army 12-2 in the second half with reserve keeper Monica Lee stopping all four shots, the last  an attempt by Hailey Coonrad with 13 seconds remaining to force the overtime. Mains' diving save on Dee Clegg's boot just over four minutes into the first overtime kept the Black Knights off the scoreboard as she finished with three saves, while Betterbed's header off Clegg's corner kick early in the second and final 10-minute overtime period was high.

"We had chances but we didn't start getting quality opportunities until the overtime," stated head army coach Stefanie Golan following Army's sixth shutout of the season. "Lehigh is a good team and played very well and we feel fortunate to leave with a point (given for a tie)."

The Black Knights, opening a five-game road slate, leave conference play to take on Ivy League member Penn Sunday afternoon in the first meeting between the two schools.

"The schedule we have is to put the team in a position to fight adversity," commented Golan, "and Pennsylvania  is the type of teams we want to play and get some results."

The Quakers, coming off a 2-1 league edging of Cornell to improve to 5-2-2 , will be a stern test for Army as they are unbeaten at home (4-0-1).

NOTES: Army's five-game road slate in the longest of the year ... Alex Lostetter and Monica Lee combined for six saves in the draw with Lehigh ... it is the second time that Lee has played this season and both times she shared a shutout with Lostetter ... following Sunday's game, the Black Knights face a stern test next weekend as they return to conference play when they head to Washington, D.C., area for league games against preseason favorite Navy and American.
