Turnnidge's Late Goal Off Corner Kick Lifts Army To Victory

Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Senior Carlie Turnnidge's goal off a corner kick with 36 seconds remaining lifted Army to a 1-0 win and ruined host Central Connecticut State's season debut at Arute Field on Thursday afternoon. The Black Knights (1-1-0) dominated play throughout, outshooting the Blue Devils 14-3 along with holding a 9-4 corner kick advantage.

Following a scoreless first half in which Army held a 7-1 shot advantage along with earning five corner kicks to one for CCSU, the second half appeared to be following the same script with the Black Knights dominating play but coming up empty as keeper Nikola Deiter turned in a strong performance. Deiter turned aside eight shots, four in each half with the last with just over 15 minutes left on an attempt by freshman Donna Bennett.

The Black Knights earned four corner kicks over the final 15 minutes of play with Turnnidge ripping two over a span of 35 seconds in the final 1:14 of the game. The senior midfielder capitalized at the 89:24 mark when Deiter bobbled the corner kick and it went across the line into the net for Army's first win of the season. The goal was a career first for Turnnidge.

"We had a lot of other opportunities that we got unlucky and didn't finish, so we will take the lucky one," said second-year Army coach Stefanie Golan. "We played very strong defensively, we didn't make many mistakes and we played with lot of intensity and there times when we played really nice soccer."

Junior goalkeeper Monica Lee recorded both of her saves in the second half, the first just 38 seconds into the period and the second with just over 10 minutes remaining along with being challenged by four corner kicks in recording her second career shutout.

All three of junior Erringer Helbling's shots were on goal along with two of freshman Kim An's three attempts.

"Erringer did a great job on top where she proved to be dangerous," added Golan. "Monica was solid in goal and did well when called upon along with doing a good job of organizing the backs. This is a young team that is working hard."

CCSU was picked second in the Northeast Conference preseason poll. The Blue Devils captured the regular-season title last year and were the top seed of the tournament where they finished runner-up.

Army closes out its mini three-game slate when it visits Delaware Saturday. The Blue Hens (1-0-0), who return over 80 percent of last year's offensive leaders, defeated Delaware State University 7-0 in their season debut.

"Delaware opened up last weekend with a very strong start scoring seven goals," stated Golan. "We have a good handle on the game and we are looking to rebound back with the same level of intensity that we showed today and want to continue to get stronger on the attacking side of the ball."

NOTES: The win was the third straight in the series with CCSU as Army pulled ahead 3-1 following its second straight blanking ...the Black Knights posted a 3-0 win in 2008 at West Point while their first win over the Blue Devils was a 4-1 decision in 1997 ... four freshmen were among Army's starting 11 with two others among six substitutes ... Army and Delaware will be meeting for the first time when the teams square off Saturday.
