WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior women’s basketball player Jen Hazlett was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday following a pair impressive performances. Hazlett averaged team highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals during a 2-0 week for the Black Knights, scoring two of the biggest points of her career against Brown on Saturday afternoon.
The Black Knights (4-1) defeated the Bears, 67-65, after Hazlett’s mid-air putback off a Kelsey Minato miss with 1.5 seconds left sealed the win. Hazlett scored the game’s final four points, tying the score at 65-65 with 52 seconds left by sinking a pair of free-throws, before crashing the lane for Minato’s shot, grabbing the ball in flight and using a soft touch to put it back up and score the game-winning basket. Hazlett finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals against Brown. The shot was also recognized as Army’s Play of the Week on Monday.
Prior to that game, Hazlett totaled a team-best 18 points and five assists in a 66-52 victory over Manhattan on Wednesday night. Additionally, the Syracuse, Utah, native snagged six rebounds and was credited with a pair of assists. For the week she averaged 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 41.9 percent from the floor.
Hazlett is the second consecutive women’s basketball player to earn AAA Athlete of the Week honors following Minato’s recognition a week ago. Hazlett earned the certificate once previously in her four-year career, on Dec. 17, 2012, after helping the Black Knights match the Academy record for three-pointers made in one game.
