WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman women’s basketball player Aimee Oertner was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week and the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday following a dazzling debut in Friday night’s season opener. Oertner collected a double-double to lead the Black Knights to a 65-62 victory at Wagner.

Coming off the bench, Oertner shot 7-for-11 from the field for 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The 6-2 forward/center also swatted a game-best four shots, the most by a Black Knight since Nov. 25, 2011, when Jen Hazlett also blocked four attempts. Oertner played 30 minutes in the game, including 17 of the final 20.

Oertner is the first freshman in program history to record a double-double in a season opener. She is the first Black Knight since the 2003-04 inaugural game to achieve the statistical feat (Shavonne Holden –  16 points, 12 rebounds vs. Columbia – Nov. 21, 2003).

The Slatington, Pa., led an Army rebounding contingent which combined for 54 caroms, the most since collecting that same total on Dec. 19, 2005, against Gardner-Webb. Those 54 rebounds led to 23 second-chance points, 17 more than Wagner totaled. Oertner and the Black Knights controlled the paint on Friday night, as 40 percent (26 of 65) of their scoring occurred within the lane. For Oertner, 14 of her 18 points came from close range.

The win at Wagner ended a 25-year, 14-game losing streak of road-game season openers for the Black Knights. The victory also gave seventh-year head coach Dave Magarity his 100th at the Academy.

Oertner is the first women’s basketball player since Jan. 30, 2012, to earn AAA Athlete of the Week accolades.

Monday's Patriot League certificates were the first of the season as most teams began play this past Friday. Hazlett claimed an honorable mention nod following her 18-point, 8-rebound showing against the Seahawks.

Current sophomore Olivia Schretzman was the most recent Black Knight to earn the conference's Rookie of the Week citation. Schretzman was named the league's top newcomer twice last season - Jan. 23 and Nov. 28. Oertner's rookie honor is the 36th in Army's Patriot League history.
