WEST POINT, N.Y. - Ninth-year head women’s basketball coach Dave Magarity announced his eight-player recruiting class on Wednesday. The Class of 2018 comes to West Point from six different states and matches the largest in Magarity’s tenure as Army’s head coach.

“This is a big class with five players coming direct from high school and three coming from our prep school,” Magarity said. “Over the next two years, we will be graduating 11 players and with this class, we’re really trying to build continuity with the program going forward. We brought in players who can fill specific needs that we have and we’re hoping some of them will be able to contribute significantly. We will also be fielding a sub-varsity team to allow a group of players to gain playing experience.”

Jen Hazlett, one of Army’s leading contributors to the 2014 Patriot League Championship team, graduated in May after leading the Black Knights in rebounding (7.5) and finishing second on the team in scoring (13.7) last season.

A highly touted post player from Stafford, Va., Jahla Osborne comes to West Point after a standout playing career at Colonial Forge High School. As a 6-0 forward, Osborne averaged school records of 15.2 points and 12.0 rebounds per game during her senior campaign, while landing on the Virginia High School League (VHSL) 6A South Region first team and the VHSL 6A All-State second team. In her senior year alone, Osborne posted 384 points and 263 rebounds, which both set school records for a single season. She also became the first player in Colonial Forge history to reach the 1,000-point and 1,000-rebound plateaus for her career.

A 5-6 native of Whitefish, Mont., Nicole Heavirland arrives at Army following time at Glacier High School in Kalispell, Mont., and Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. As a senior at Phillips Exeter, Heavirland posted averages of 13.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.6 steals per game. A three-year high school captain, Heavirland was selected to the All-New England Prep School Athletic Conference first team following the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons and was named to the Montana All-State first team after her final season at Glacier in 2011-12. She began her high school career at Glacier High School before transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy prior to her junior year.

Three players join Army following a year on the USMAPS team, including 5-9 guard Janae McNeal. Prior to her season at USMAPS, the Spotsylvania, Va., native competed in basketball, soccer and volleyball at Courtland High School. McNeal proved effective in a number of areas as a high school player, averaging upwards of 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals during her senior campaign. She led Courtland to the Virginia State Championship game as a junior and senior and became just the 29th Virginia High School League player to reach the 2,000-point plateau for her career.

Also joining the team from USMAPS is 6-3 forward Lena’ Hicks. Hicks’ size will help bolster the Black Knights’ frontline that led the Patriot League in rebounding margin (+5.2) a season ago. Before spending the 2013-14 academic year at USMAPS, Hicks enjoyed a four-year career at Elkton High School in Elkton, Md. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Hicks averaged 18.0 points and 13.0 rebounds as a senior, while earning Elkton High School Athlete of the Year honors. Hicks was an all-county selection twice and drew an All-Chesapeake honorable mention nod as a junior.

Twin sisters Daizjah and Destinee Morris arrive as direct admits from Centennial High School in Minnesota. Hailing from Lino Lakes, Minn., Daizjah and Destinee will provide added depth to Army’s perimeter. Daizjah posted averages of 15.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.1 steals as a senior, while collecting all-conference honors in each of her final two seasons. She earned her team’s “Miss Defense Award” three times and holds a number of defensive records at her high school to include career steals (271) and single-season steals (118).

Also a two-time all-conference player, Destinee averaged 8.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as a senior and earned the Spotlight on Scholarship Award for academic success during all four years of high school.

Margaret Anne Hubbell joins the squad after two years at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pa. During her senior season, Hubbell averaged 17.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game and shot 53.0 percent from the field. The native of Doylestown, Pa., played two seasons of basketball at Central Bucks East High School before transferring to Germantown Academy as a junior. Hubbell capped her high school career with 1,058 points and 759 rebounds, while earning selection to the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic All-Tournament Team as a senior.

Aliyah Murray brings added size to the Black Knights’ backcourt, as the former USMAPS guard stands 5-10. Murray could serve as a versatile player for Army after making the transition from forward to guard prior to her senior year at Delran High School in Delran, N.J. Murray averaged 18.3 points per game as a senior, while also drawing all-county honors in her final high school season. Along with her offensive contributions at Delran, Murray was also considered one of the team’s top defensive players.

Army opens its 2014-15 season on Nov. 15, when the Black Knights travel to Quinnipiac for a road contest before playing at Christl Arena for the first time on Nov. 18 against Stony Brook.
