WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. One of the most decorated players in recent Army women’s basketball history, senior guard Alex McGuire added another award to her bevy of honors in what was a standout career for the Black Knights program on Tuesday when she was named to the 2008-09 All-Met Division I Women’s Basketball second team by the National Invitational Tournament and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. McGuire will be honored among the area’s elite at a dinner Wednesday evening at the Giants Stadium Club in East Rutherford, N.J.
McGuire capped her outstanding career by leading the team averaging 12.9 points per game. Her 399 points as a senior, bringing her career total to 1,455 points to land her third on Army’s all-time leading scorers ledger. After putting together one of the most successful careers in Army’s 31-year women’s basketball history, McGuire ranks in the career top-10 in scoring (3rd), field goals made (6th), free throw percentage (2nd), assists (7th), steals (6th), and three-point field goals made (4th).
One of 14 players to make up Army’s 1,000-point club, McGuire finished the season ranked among the best in the conference in scoring (12.9 6th), three-point percentage (37.6 3rd), three-point field goals made (1.8 5th), free throw percentage (82.6 T-4th) and steals (1.5 7th). She was also key factor in Army leading the Patriot League in three-point percentage (.364) after expanding her game to become one of the Black Knights’ premiere three-point shooters. Her 56 triples made in 2008-09 are more than the total of her three previous years combined.
With five 20-plus-point games to her credit this season, McGuire scored in double figures in 21 games and led Army in the scoring column 12 times as a senior. She has started 106 career games, including all 31 as a senior.
A native of Gambrills, Md., McGuire earned several postseason honors in each of her four years at West Point, starting with Rookie of the Year honors during Army’s 2005-06 run to the Patriot League title. She followed that major award with all-league honors in all four years at the Academy, including a first team nod in each of the last two years.
McGuire is the fourth player in Army history to garner All-Met status, joining Lisa Russell (1992-93), Katie Macfarlane (2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04) and Cara Enright (2005-06, 2006-07).
