WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Hot three-point shooting, including a record-matching performance by sophomore Kelsey Minato, gave Army women’s basketball the edge in a 75-51 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday night. Hosting the Knights in their home opener, the Black Knights made 10 threes, including six by Minato en route to a career-best 25-point showing by the sophomore point guard.

Army (1-1) shot just 28.9 percent inside the arc but was 52.6 percent from deep to secure its first win of the season. Four players connected on triples for the Black Knights, including the lion’s share by Minato, who matched Cara Enright’s program record originally established on Feb. 11, 2006, against Lehigh.

FDU (0-2) got on the board first and led for much of the first three minutes, before Army took over at the 17-minute mark and never looked back. Sophomore Brianna Johnson scored six of Army’s next nine points as the Black Knights went on a 13-2 run after opening the game down 0-4.

All ten of Army’s long-range buckets came in the potent first half as the Black Knights led at the break, 46-32. Minato had 20 points at the half, securing her sixth-career 20-point performance.

Army’s lead ballooned in the second half, opening on a 9-2 run before stretching the advantage to 23 as sophomore Aimee Oertner increased her point total to 11.  Oertner also grabbed five rebounds and was credited with a pair of blocks to round out her stat line.

FDU got no closer than 16 points the rest of the way as eighth-year head coach Dave Magarity started going to his bench. Freshmen Shelby Lindsay, Bridgette Dougherty and Stephanie Geyer saw their first collegiate minutes, as Lindsay notched her first career points off a pair of free-throws. The Black Knights’ lead grew to 27 with 15 seconds left before finishing up at 24 with the 75-51 win.

Army won the battle of the boards for the second consecutive game, outrebounding FDU 47-29, including junior Olivia Schretzman’s second-consecutive double-digit carom performance with 11 on Thursday night. Freshman Danielle Failor was two boards shy of her second consecutive double-double as she totaled 11 points eight rebounds and two assists. Johnson, making her second straight start, tacked on 10 points and seven boards.
