LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Shelby Romine hit a jumper as time expired in regulation to give Bucknell at 56-55 win over the Army women's basketball team in Patriot League action on Saturday evening at Sojka Pavilion. After the loss, the Black Knights drop to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the Bison improve to 9-7 and 4-2.
Sophomore Kelsey Minato tallied 13 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Black Knights, extending her double-digit scoring streak to 33 games. Junior Olivia Schretzman finished with 10 points, while sophomore Brianna Johnson netted eight. Sophomore Jean Parker and senior Jen Hazlett added six and five points, respectively.
Romine notched a game-high 19 points for Bucknell, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Junior Audrey Dotson posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, while sophomore Claire Maree O'Bryan totaled 11 points, with all 11 coming in the second half. Freshman Claire DeBoer recorded eight points and seven rebounds.
Army opened the second half with a 15-4 run, including a stretch of 10 unanswered points during a 2:25 span. Bucknell stopped the bleeding with four straight free-throws, including three by O'Bryan, before Minato's lay-in at the 11:35 mark built the visitors' lead back up to 41-29. After DeBoer's lay-up 54 seconds into the second half, the Black Knights held the Bison to without a field goal for 7:48, but Bucknell quickly turned around their poor shooting by hitting 10-of-15 from the floor in the remaining 11:18. Already on a 4-2 scoring advantage since Army's 15-4 run to open the second period, Bucknell built their run to 17-4 to come back to a 43-42 deficit with 8:49 left in the contest. O'Bryan played a crucial role during the run, netting nine of her team's 17 points on 2-of-2 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 on free-throws.
Schretzman netted four points during Army's 5-0 run over the ensuing 1:57 before Romine capped an 11-5 run to give the hosts a 54-53 lead, their first since the 5:02 mark of the first half, with just 24 seconds left. Sophomore Aimee Oertner knocked in the go-ahead lay-in to put the Black Knights in front, 55-54, with four ticks remaining before Romine won the game for Bucknell as time expired.
Both sides struggled shooting in the early goings of the opening half, as Army and Bucknell each were 2-of-10 from the field after the first 6:53. After the Black Knights took an 8-6 lead with 12:07 left in the first half, but the Bison outscored the visitors 11-5 over the next 6:41 to command a four-point advantage at 17-13. Army responded with an 11-4 run to close the stanza and take a 24-21 lead into halftime.
The Black Knights return home to Christl Arena for a 7 p.m. tilt against Colgate on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
