PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – A rough second half ruined Army’s chances of escaping Providence, R.I., with a win as women’s basketball fell at Brown, 48-45, on Wednesday evening at Pizzitola Sports Center. The Black Knights led the entire game until just over four minutes remaining when the Bears used a 10-4 run to seal the game, taking advantage of Army’s lowly shooting night.

The Black Knights (10-4) shot a season-low 22.6 percent (14-62) on the night, including a crippling 5-for-32 clip in the second half en route to their lowest scoring output since totaling 39 against American on Jan. 21, 2012.

Despite being under the weather, junior Jen Hazlett had a team-high 10 points, including a pair of threes, to lead the Black Knights in scoring for the fourth time this season. Sophomore Olivia Schretzman anchored Army’s rebounding contingent with her 11 boards, while senior Anna Simmers was credited with 10 rebounds to add to the effort.

Army stormed out to an 11-3 lead early in the first as Brown (5-6) burned a timeout five minutes into the contest. The Black Knights’ lead swelled to double-digits midway through the first and they maintained that double-digit cushion until just under a minute left before the break as Army took a 31-22 advantage into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, Army’s shooting dipped, making just two of its next 14 attempts as Brown made its comeback. The Bears used a 10-2 run between 11:46 and 6:07 to cut the Black Knights’ lead to one, 39-38. Simmers pushed the lead to three with 4:58 remaining with what would be Army’s final made field goal of the game. The senior guard would finish with nine points, four of which came from the free-throw line.

Brown’s Lauren Clarke stole the show in the final four minutes, giving the Bears their first lead of the game with 4:06 remaining after draining a three. Clarke tallied Brown’s final eight points of the game, including another go-ahead three with 1:02 remaining.

Schretzman trimmed Brown’s lead to one, 46-45, with 38 seconds remaining after going 1-for-2 from the line, but Simmers was whistled for a foul with 19 seconds remaining, sending Clarke to the line where she sank a pair of freebies. Simmers’ last-second heave from three banged off the backboard as Army suffered its second road loss of the season.

Clarke ended with 13 points as one of three Bears in double figures, led by Sheila Dixon who posted 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophie Bikofsky chipped in 10 points.

Army will close out the nonconference portion of its schedule on Sunday when the Black Knights travel to first-time opponent Morgan State. The Bears last played on Dec. 18 – a 75-50 loss at Missouri – and are 4-8 on the season, having lost six of their last seven games.
