Black Knights Open 2014 At Southern Scuffle

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army wrestling team with kick off the 2014 portion of its schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 1, when it competes in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. The two-day tournament will be contested at McKenzie Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Live scoring and video for the event will be provided by TheSouthernScuffle.com as well as Track Wrestling. Flow Wrestling will also carry live video of tournament action for subscribers.

Thirty-four schools are set to compete in the tournament, including 34 All-Americans and eight NCAA finalists from 2013. Also featured in the event will be 10 teams ranked in the top-25 nationally by Intermat, including top-ten squads Penn State (1st), Minnesota (2nd), Oklahoma State (4th) and Cornell (T-7th).

Army was last in action on Dec. 6 and 7 at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., where it tied for 28th out of 33 schools. Seniors Paul Hancock (157 pounds) and Ryan Tompkins (184) each finished 3-2 overall, advancing to the second day of competition before falling in the quarterfinal round of their respective consolation brackets.

Sophomore Brian Harvey (174) paces the Black Knights with 16 victories, while Hancock lists second with 13 wins. Rounding out the group of Army wrestlers with double-digit wins are juniors Chandler Smith (165) and Cole Gracey (165), who have 12 and 11 victories, respectively. Hancock has posted a team-best eight bonus-point wins (4 major decisions, 3 pins, 1 technical fall), while Gracey and senior Alex Smith (174) have recorded six bonus-point victories apiece.

The Southern Scuffle is the fourth of five regular-season tournaments for the Black Knights this season. Army took third place at the Brockport-Oklahoma Invitational on Nov. 9 before placing fourth at the New York State Championships on Nov. 24. The Black Knights finished 10th in the 24-team field at last year's Southern Scuffle.

After the Southern Scuffle, Army will take part in the Boston Duals, where it will compete in dual matches against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) foes Brown, Boston University and Harvard.
