WEST POINT, N.Y. -
After placing 28th at last weekend's Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., the Army wrestling team returns home to the friendly confines of Christl Arena on Thursday, Dec. 8, to host Hofstra in a non-conference dual match. The action is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m.
Twitter updates will be offered throughout the match via Army's official Twitter handle (@ArmyAthletics).
Junior 133-pounder Jordan Thome went 3-2 with three pins to lead the Black Knights at the Cliff Keen Invitational last weekend. Thome and freshman 125-pounder Scott Filbert were the only Army wrestlers to advance to the second day of competition at the prestigious tournament.
Army (3-3) began the season by sweeping 24th-ranked Iowa State and Boston University at the Nor'easter Duals, but the Black Knights have lost three of their last four dual matches. Army's most recent dual victory was a convincing one as the Black Knights posted a 45-3 win versus Sacred Heart in closing out the Northeast Duals (Nov. 26) with a 1-2 mark.
Thome, Army's lone returning NCAA qualifier, leads the Black Knights with 12 wins, six pins and seven bonus-point victories. Senior Jimmy Rafferty (11-8), junior Daniel Young (11-4) and sophomore Wil Brown (11-7) are tied for second on the squad with 11 wins apiece. Brown ranks second on the club with four pins and six bonus-point victories.
Filbert (10-7), junior Connor Hanafee (10-8) and sophomore David White (10-10) list tied for fourth on the team with 10 wins each. Filbert has recorded three pins and one technical fall, while Hanafee and White have both notched three bonus-point wins.
Hofstra will be competing in just its second dual match of the season when the Pride invade Christl Arena on Thursday night. Hofstra (1-0) knocked off Wisconsin, 25-12, on Nov. 20. The Pride is coming off a 10th-place showing at last weekend's Cliff Keen Invitational.
Senior P.J. Gillespie placed runner-up at 165 pounds, junior Steve Bonanno finished third at 125 pounds and junior Justin Accordino took 10th at 149 pounds to lead the Pride at the Cliff Keen Invitational.
Hofstra boasts a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in Bonanno (11th) and Gillespie (fourth).
Army and Hofstra have met 17 times previously. The Pride own a 10-6-1 all-time record versus the Black Knights following last season's 26-10 victory in Hempstead, N.Y.
Thursday's contest marks Army's final competition of the 2011 calendar year. The Black Knights will ring in the New Year at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., during the weekend of Jan. 1-2. Army's next home match is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 8, versus Rutgers.
