WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army wrestling team is in action for the final time this calendar year, as it heads to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the nationally regarded Cliff Keen Invitational on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7. The two-day event will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
A live stream of the event will be provided through Flow Wrestling's subscription-based platform.
The field is set to include 33 schools representing 21 states and the District of Columbia. Thirteen squads ranked in the top 25 in Intermat's national poll will be featured, including top-ten teams Oklahoma (5th), Northern Iowa (6th), Nebraska (7th) and Iowa State (8th).
The Black Knights are coming off their first dual match defeats of the season at Sunday's Grapple at the Garden. Army fell to Hofstra, 23-16, before dropping a 21-15 decision to Princeton. Senior Ryan Tompkins (184 pounds) went 2-0 on the day, while six others picked up one victory.
Sophomore Brian Harvey (174) leads all Black Knights with 14 wins, while junior Chandler Smith (165) and senior Paul Hancock (157) have 12 and 10 victories, respectively. Hancock paces Army with seven bonus-point wins (4 major decisions, 2 pins, 1 technical fall), and classmate Alex Smith (174) has recorded six (4 major decisions, 2 pins).
The Cliff Keen Invitational will mark the third of five regular-season tournaments for the Black Knights this season. Army placed third at the Brockport-Oklahoma Invitational on Nov. 9 and took fourth at the New York State Championships on Nov. 24. Last year, Army finished tied for 24th at the Cliff Keen Invitational.
Following a 24-day break from competition, the Black Knights will resume their tournament slate on Jan. 1-2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
