WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army wrestling squad will compete in its second straight tournament on Sunday, Nov. 24, when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y., for the 45th annual New York State Championships.
The all-day event will be hosted at Cornell University's Newman Arena and is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
Senior Paul Hancock (157 pounds), junior Chandler Smith (165) and freshman Logan Everett (133) are all 5-1 this season for Army, with each posting at least two bonus-point wins. Hancock paces the Black Knights with four bonus-point victories (two major decisions, one pin, one technical fall), while Everett and Smith each have two.
Sophomore Bryce Barnes (197) is 4-2 overall with a pair of technical falls and a pin, and senior Ryan Tompkins (184) holds the team's lone unbeaten record with a mark of 4-0. Tompkins picked up three of his wins en route to the 184-pound title at the Brockport-Oklahoma Invitational on Nov. 9 to help Army to a third-place finish.
Army placed fifth among 18 teams at last season's New York State Championships on Nov. 17, while Cornell took first. Nine Black Knights finished in the top eight, including Hancock, who placed runner-up in the 165-pound bracket.
Next up for the Black Knights is the second annual Grapple at the Garden New York's Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Dec. 1. The event will feature 12 teams from around the country, including No. 7 Cornell, No. 14 Illinois and No. 15 Maryland (all rankings reflect the Intermat national poll). Army will compete in a pair of dual matches at the Grapple at the Garden, versus Hofstra at 10 a.m. and against Princeton at noon.
