EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Army freshman Trevor Smith placed first in the 125 KG (roughly 275 pounds) bracket in the Senior Division at the Phil Portuese Northeast Regionals last weekend. With the victory, Smith earned qualification to the World Team Trials held in Madison, Wis., on May 31-June 1.
Smith went 4-1 in the tournament, with three of his four wins coming as bonus-point victories. Smith's first win was an 18-7 technical fall over Cole Lampman of Princeton. Following his opening victory, Smith pinned Donovan Lozada in 1:32 before pinning Michael Hughes of the Black & Gold Wrestling Club in 2:16.
In his final match of the competition, Smith got past Kostadinos Karageorge from Ohio State by an 11-7 margin.
Smith picked up 12 wins in his debut season with the Black Knights and finished tied for second on the team with four pins. As the season progressed, Smith saw more time in Army's starting lineup, eventually starting in three of the team's final four dual matches.
