The Army wrestling team will take part in its final regular-season tournament when it heads to New London, Conn., for the All-Academy Championships on Saturday, Feb. 1. The tournament will be contested at the United States Coast Guard Academy's Merriman Gym.
The first round will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. before semifinals and consolation matches take place at noon. The consolation semifinals and third place matches are set to begin at 2 p.m. and the finals will kick off at 4 p.m.
The Black Knights will join seven other schools in the event including service-academy rivals Air Force and Navy. Among the other five programs are The Citadel, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Norwich and the Virginia Military Institute.
Army is coming off a pair of dual match wins in Philadelphia, Pa., on Jan. 26, as it topped Penn, 21-13, before taking down Drexel, 20-19. Seniors Paul Hancock (157 pounds) and Tyler Rauenzahn (141), and sophomores Bryce Barnes (197) and Brian Harvey (174) all finished 2-0 last Sunday, while four others went 1-1.
Junior Chandler Smith (165) has posted 26 wins to lead all Black Knights so far this year, while Harvey is second with 22 victories. Smith is the team's leader in major decisions (6), and junior Cole Gracey (165) paces the squad with four technical falls.
Army finished with 71 points to place fourth at last year's All-Academy Championships, while Navy took the top spot with 128.5 points. Air Force was second with 92.5 points and The Citadel finished third with 72 points.
Following the All-Academy Championships, Army will return home for a dual match against Bucknell. The 2 p.m. match with best contested at West Point's Gillis Field House.
