The Army wrestling team will look to build on its momentum following a 2-1 showing at the Boston Duals on Jan. 12, when it travels to American on Saturday. The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) match will be contested at Bender Arena and is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Army (4-3, 3-3 EIWA) finished 2-1 at last weekend's Boston Duals, posting wins over Brown (28-12) and Harvard (25-13), while dropping a closely-contested match to Boston University (18-16). Seven Black Knights recorded multiple wins in the event, including sophomore Brian Harvey (174 pounds) and junior Chandler Smith (165), who went 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. Seniors Paul Hancock (157), Tyler Rauenzahn (141), Ryan Tompkins (184), junior Hunter Wood (125) and sophomore Bryce Barnes (197) each finished 2-1.
Smith leads Army with 24 wins this season, including a 3-0 record in dual matches. Harvey is close behind with 19 victories, while Tompkins and junior Cole Gracey (165) each have 17. Hancock has 16 wins and paces the Black Knights with eight bonus-point victories (4 major decisions, 3 pins, 1 technical fall).
American (4-3, 3-1) collected their first three EIWA wins by going 3-0 at the Boston Duals. The Eagles swept through the competition, notching victories over Harvard (25-12), Boston University (22-16) and Brown (31-13).
The Eagles boast a pair of wrestlers ranked in the top 11 of Intermat's national poll. Daniel Mitchell, who stands ninth in the country at 197 pounds, lists 17-3 on the season, while 11th-ranked David Terao (125) has compiled a mark of 21-7.
Army is 3-1 in its all-time series with American. The last meeting between the schools came on Feb. 10, 2013, with the Black Knights collecting a 34-8 win over the Eagles.
Following its match against American, Army will take a week off before facing Penn and Drexel in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sunday, Jan. 26. The Black Knights will take on the Quakers at 1 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. match opposite the Dragons.
