Army freshman Cole Gracey pinned his opponent at 165 pounds, but Arizona State won six of the 10 bouts to defeat the Black Knights, 23-15, Saturday morning at the Northeast Duals inside the Edward F. McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.
Army (2-2) led 15-7 following Gracey's pin, but Arizona State (3-0) closed the match by reeling off four straight wins to earn the victory.
Army freshman Scott Filbert gave the Black Knights an early 3-0 lead as he took a 2-0 decision from David Prado in the 125-pound bout.
Arizona State responded by winning the next two bouts to assume a 7-3 advantage. Shane McGough earned a 12-0 major decision versus Army junior Jordan Thome in the 133-pound matchup, while Nathan Hoffer doubled up Black Knight junior Connor Hanafee, 6-3, at 141 pounds.
Army bounced back with wins in the next three bouts to assume a 15-7 lead. Junior Daniel Young posted an 8-1 decision opposite Victor De Jesus at 149 pounds and senior Jimmy Rafferty recorded a 6-2 decision against Kyle DeBerry at 157 pounds as the Black Knights moved in front, 9-7. Gracey then pinned Hans Rasmusson in five minutes, 30 seconds in the 165-pound bout to extend Army's cushion to 15-7.
ASU trimmed Army's lead to 15-13 after Eric Starks defeated Army junior Collin Wittmeyer, 9-2, at 174 pounds and Kevin Radford upended Black Knight sophomore Wil Brown, 7-1, in the 184-pound matchup. The Sun Devils then reclaimed the lead (17-15) when Tommy Burriel took a 14-1 major decision from Army senior Daniel Young at 197 pounds. Arizona State capped its comeback in the heavyweight bout as Levi Cooper pinned Black Knight sophomore Curtis Garner in 3:41.
Army returns to action at the Northeast Duals later today with matches versus Binghamton (11:15 a.m.) and Sacred Heart (1:40 p.m.).
