OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Paul Hancock won his first consolation bout but dropped his second and Brian Harvey also lost his match as both Army wrestlers were eliminated during the third session of the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Chesapeake Energy Center.
Hancock upset #11 Taylor Walsh of Indiana but fell to #14 Joseph LaVallee of Missouri.
Brian Harvey, who won twice during the consolation rounds on Thursday evening, was beat by #11 Stephen Doty of Virginia,
Hancock finished the season 29-14, while Harvey concluded his year 30-13.
Hancock wasted little time, using a duck under to secure a takedown 26 seconds into his match against Indiana’s Walsh, the #11 seed. Hancock nearly picked up near fall points before Walsh escaped. Hancock picked up a second takedown in the opening stanza and two near fall points on the edge of the mat to build a 6-1 advantage.
Hancock, who collected more than two minutes of riding time in the first period, was down to start the second stanza. Walsh earned three near fall points to cut his deficit to 6-4 while erasing the bulk of Hancock’s riding time.
Hancock chose neutral to start the final period and dominated with a takedown, near fall points and riding time for a 13-4 victory.
Hancock came back later in the session and faced #14 Joseph LaVallee of Missouri. LaVallee earned three first period takedowns with a pair of Hancock escapes and led 6-2 after the opening three minutes. LaVallee continued to add to his lead and secured the 14-4 victory.
Harvey, who won twice on Thursday, also faced a ranked wrestler in his match on Friday, #11 Doty of Virginia.
After a scoreless first period, Doty collected three near fall points in the second period, while amassing two minutes of riding time.
The wrestlers were neutral to open the third period and Doty picked up a late takedown and added a riding time point for the final margin of victory, 6-0.
